Selk'nam or, Looking, Hoping

In the museum of natural history
there are two giant turtles:
the sea turtle
and the giant
Galapagos tortoise--
its scales
larger than I've ever seen,

enough that
we could walk on them
if we were little --
each plate a Pangaea
a Tierra del Fuego --
though suffering
intense winds, winters:

the protection
we'd have to hunt for,
torpidly, spears in hand
throwing long dashes
toward a destination, hoping
to reach a target.
